[edit]Inherited, from a Vulgar Latin *sēperāre (or *ex-sēperāre), from Latin sēparāre, present active infinitive of sēparō (“I separate”), from sē- (“apart”) + parō (“prepare”). Compare Asturian dixebrar, Old Spanish xebrar, exebrar, dessebrar, Occitan sebrar, French sevrer. Doublet of separar, a borrowing.
