Usage notes

• (true): When used predicatively, the adjective is always either in the partitive singular, or somewhat less commonly in the nominative singular:

  Tämä on totta! / Tämä on tosi!

  This is true! / I mean it/business!

• (real, serious): Used as an attribute or as a modifier in a compound term.

  ryhtyä tositoimiin ― to take serious action

  tosiasia ― fact

• The comparative form is uncommon and the superlative form is rare.
• Outside of more formal and technical language (e.g. in logic), in everyday speech, all other forms than the nominative and partitive singular are uncommon, outside of their use as adverbs:
  • näyttää toteen (“to prove”)
  • olla totta (“to be true”)
  • ottaa todesta (“to take seriously; to take for granted”)
  • todella (“really, very”)
