Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Turkic *tēl (“wire, string; thong; strand”).[1] Cognate with Karakhanid تِلیٖ (tili, “thong”), Crimean Tatar and Turkish tel, Turkmen til, Kumyk and Nogai тел (tel), Chuvash тал (tal, “bundle”). Alternatively, related to Armenian թել (tʻel, “thread”),[2][3] either as a direct borrowing or originating from the same Iranian source.
The sense 'telegram' is possibly a phono-semantic matching of Azerbaijani teleqram.
