From Proto-Vietic *k-mǝl (cloud), from Proto-Austroasiatic *rmɨl (cloud). Cognate with Muong mầl, Bahnar hơmơ̆l, Kuy lmʌ̤l, Santali ᱨᱤᱢᱤᱞ (rimil).

Attested in the Annan Jishi (安南即事, 13th century) as (MC mwoj).
