lijden
Appearance
Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle Dutch liden, from Old Dutch līthan, from Proto-Germanic *līþaną. The sense developed from “go, travel” via “endure” to “suffer”, under the influence of the originally unrelated noun leed (“sorrow”) and from the verb Middle Dutch leiden, leden, from Old Dutch *lēthen, *lēthon, from Proto-West Germanic *laiþēn, *laiþijan. See the same in German leiden, Low German lieden.
