Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese escolher (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), possibly from a Vulgar Latin *excolligere, from Latin ex- + colligere (to gather). Compare Portuguese escolher, Spanish escoger, Catalan escollir.
