From Proto-Vietic *caːjʔ ~ *cɔːjʔ (banana). Cognates include Tho caːj³, Hung caːj, Muong chuổi (banana).

Attested as chuối, chuếi (banana) in the Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum (1651).
