Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese (violent; vicious, SV: bạo). Cognate with Muong Bi pão.

According to Trần Trọng Dương (2014), the sense "storm" arose from the clipping usage of Chinese 暴風 / 暴风 (bàofēng, violent wind; windstorm) (SV: bạo phong), probably as early as the common Viet-Muong stage.
