[edit]From Old Galician-Portuguese afumar (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Vulgar Latin *affūmāre, ultimately from Latin fūmus (“smoke”, noun). By surface analysis, a- + fumo + -ar. Compare Portuguese and Asturian afumar, Spanish ahumar.
