[edit]Of Turkic origin, ultimately from Proto-Turkic *tilmač (“interpreter”), from Proto-Turkic *til (“tongue”). Cognate with Turkish dilmaç, Kazakh тілмаш (tılmaş), Uzbek tilmoch.
