[edit]Inherited from Proto-Slavic *tъlmačь, from Proto-Turkic *tilmač (compare Turkish dilmaç (“interpreter”)), from Proto-Turkic *til (“tongue”) (Turkish dil) + Proto-Turkic *-mač (“noun suffix”). Cognate with Russian толма́ч (tolmáč), Slovene tolmač, Serbo-Croatian ту̀ма̄ч/tùmāč, Polish tłumacz (“translator”). Non-Slavic cognates include German Dolmetscher and Hungarian tolmács.
