Inherited from Proto-Slavic *tъlmačь, from Proto-Turkic *tilmač (compare Turkish dilmaç (interpreter)), from Proto-Turkic *til (tongue) (Turkish dil) + Proto-Turkic *-mač (noun suffix). Cognate with Russian толма́ч (tolmáč), Slovene tolmač, Serbo-Croatian ту̀ма̄ч/tùmāč, Polish tłumacz (translator). Non-Slavic cognates include German Dolmetscher and Hungarian tolmács.
