Separable verbs in Afrikaans like aftree generally:

Split up in the present tense: ek tree af or if the infinitive is combined with "te": om af te tree
In a dependent clause they reunite: ... dat ek aftree.
The past participle contains the ge- marker inserted between prefix and stem: afgetree, unless the stem is already prefixed with an inseparable prefix "afbetaal"
