Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *boːwɢs, *boːɡ): semantic 氵 (“water”) + phonetic 暴 (OC *boːwɢs, *boːɡ) – waterfall. However, the phonetic component means "violence", hence it could add part of the meaning given that waterfalls can be impetuous. A conservative version is 𤄗, then the character was stylized into 瀑.
