From Mongolian ᠬᠠᠪᠠ (qaba, pug); compare Modern Khalkha Mongolian хав (xav), Manchu ᡴᠠᠪᠠᡵᡳ (kabari, pug).

This Mongolian word may be ultimately of onomatopoeic origin, cf. Mongolian ᠬᠠᠪ
ᢉᠢᠪ
and Manchu ᡴᠠᠪ
ᡴᡳᠪ
(kab kib), both meaning “many dogs mauling at each other”.

An article on the etymology of this term was written by Victor Mair in Language Log in 2017, in which he also proposed a tentative relationship between 哈巴 and 奤夿, the name of a village in Changping District of Beijing.
