     Huángōng zhī jǔ Guǎnzhòng, Mùgōng zhī jǔ Bǎilǐ, bǐ qí dé yě. Cǐ suǒyǐ guó shèn pìxiǎo, shēn zhì huìwū, ér wèizhèng yú tiānxià yě. Jīn fēi bǐ zhìyì yě, ér bǐ róngmào; fēi bǐ déxíng yě, ér lùn juéliè. Yì kěyǐ quèdí fúyuǎn yǐ? [Pinyin]

     Duke Huan endowed Guan-Zhong with authority solely on merit, so did Duke Mu Bai-Li. This is why such small and remote states, (governed by) such lowly people, nevertheless came to rule the world. Nowadays no one judges on spirit and endeavour, but (only) complexion and adornments, nor on virtue and deeds, but (only) discuss rank and status. How could that ward off adjoining enemies and win over distant vassals?
