[edit]From Proto-Southwestern Tai *nawᴮ² (“rotten”), from Proto-Tai *nawᴮ (“rotten”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨶᩮᩢ᩵ᩣ, Lao ເນົ່າ (nao), Lü ᦓᧁᧈ (naw¹), Shan ၼဝ်ႈ (nāo), Ahom 𑜃𑜧 (naw) or 𑜃𑜧𑜈𑜫 (naww), Zhuang naeuh, Saek เหน้า.
