Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *nawᴮ², from Proto-Tai *nawᴮ. Cognate with Thai เน่า (nâo), Northern Thai ᨶᩮᩢ᩵ᩣ, Lao ເນົ່າ (nao), ᦓᧁᧈ (naw¹), Ahom 𑜃𑜧 (naw) or 𑜃𑜧𑜈𑜫 (naww), Zhuang naeuh, Saek เหน้า.
