Etymology

Borrowed from Classical Persian فرما (farmā, present stem form of فرمودن (farmūdan)) +‎ -ना (-nā), from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (plmwtn', plmʾd- /⁠framūdan, framāy-⁠/, to order, command). Compare Bengali ফরমানো (phormanō), Gujarati ફરમાવવું (pharmāvvũ), Marathi फर्मावणे (pharmāvṇe), Punjabi فَرماؤنا / ਫ਼ਰਮਾਉਣਾ (farmāuṇā).
