Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀓𑀥𑁂𑀤𑀺 (kadhedi), from Sanskrit कथयति (katháyati). Cognate with Bengali কহা (koha), কওয়া (koōẇa) and Assamese কোৱা (küa), Sinhalese කියනවා (kiyanawā).
