        Inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́aHtíṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́áHtiš, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵénh₁tis (birth, production). Cognate with Latin gēns, Ancient Greek γένεσις (génesis), Proto-Germanic *kinþiz. By surface analysis, जन् (jan, root) +‎ -ति (-ti).
