        From Middle Persian ʾwʾz (āwāč, āwāz, voice, sound, tune), from 𐭥𐭠𐭰 (wāč, wāz, word, speech), from Proto-Iranian *wā́xš, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wā́kš, from Proto-Indo-European *wōkʷs. Cognate with Sanskrit वाच् (vā́c) and Latin vōx.
