[edit]Inherited from Old Anatolian Turkish آرَا (ara), from Proto-Turkic *āra (“distance; interval”) and thus related to آیرمق (ayırmak, “to part; separate, choose, pick, select, distinguish”); cognate with Old Turkic 𐰺𐰀 (r¹a /āra/), Azerbaijani ara, Bashkir ара (ara), Uzbek ora and Yakut аара (aara).
