Inherited from Old Anatolian Turkish آرَا (ara), from Proto-Turkic *āra (distance; interval) and thus related to آیرمق (ayırmak, to part; separate, choose, pick, select, distinguish); cognate with Old Turkic 𐰺𐰀 (r¹a /⁠āra⁠/), Azerbaijani ara, Bashkir ара (ara), Uzbek ora and Yakut аара (aara).
