Inherited from Proto-Slavic *tysǫti, *tysęti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *tū́ˀsantis, from Proto-Indo-European *tuHsont-. Cognate with Ukrainian тисяча (tysjača), Serbo-Croatian тисућа, tisuća, Slovene tisoč, Czech and Slovak tisíc, Polish tysiąc. Akin to Lithuanian tūkstantis, Latvian tūkstotis, Gothic 𐌸𐌿𐍃𐌿𐌽𐌳𐌹 (þūsundi).

Usage notes

  • Тысяча in all cases governs the genitive plural of the noun, except for instrumental case. In instrumental case, тысяча can potentially function either as a numeral (with the form тысячью, in which case the noun must also be in instrumental case) or as a noun (with the form тысячей, in which case the following noun is in genitive plural). However, not all Russians recognize this distinction and may use both indiscriminately.
