Etymology
[edit]Learned borrowing from Koine Greek καταφθάνω (“fall upon unawares; pay in advance”). The form καταφτάνω (kataftáno), since Mediaeval times. By surface analysis, κατα- (“completely”) + φθάνω (“arrive”).[1] Doublet of καταφτάνω (kataftáno).
