Learned borrowing from Koine Greek ἀποπληρῶ (apoplērô, to pay a debt) with -ώνω (-óno) suffix, from Ancient Greek ἀποπληρόω (apoplēróō, to fill). Compare Byzantine Greek αποπληρώνω (apoplērṓnō).[1][2][3] By surface analysis, απο- (apo-) +‎ πληρώνω (pliróno).
