[edit]From Proto-Vietic *doːl, from Proto-Austroasiatic *doːl ~ *duəl (“hill, mound”). Cognate with Muong Bi tồl, Khmer ទួល (tuəl), Old Mon dal (“hill”) (whence Mon ဒဵု (tɜ̀)), Western Katu dɔːl ("back of mountain"), Minriq tol ("mountain").
Unrelated to Proto-Tai *C̥.doːjᴬ (whence Thai ดอย (dɔɔi), Zhuang ndoi).
