Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Vietic *k-ləːŋʔ (egg). Cognate with Muong tlởng, Tho [Cuối Chăm] kləːŋ³.

Attested as tlứng, tlấng in the Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum (1651).

This term appears to be the original word for "egg" within Vietic. In the (usually more) archaic Vietic languages, it was displaced by *t-luːrʔ (> Arem ulʊːlʔ, Thavung ตะลู้น), which is an Austronesian loan (cf. Malay telur).

Similarity to Proto-Khmuic *kʔloŋ (egg), whence Puoc kloŋ and Khmu [Cuang] kdoŋ, is probably coincidental, since it involved both an irregular vowel correspondence and metathesis of the glottal stop.
