[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Old Galician-Portuguese ("chorando a saluçadas", 13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria); from salouco (“sob; hiccup”) + -ar, from Vulgar Latin suggluttium (or from *suggluttiāre), from Latin singultus, with the prefix sub- and influenced by gluttīre; this form (containing a hard -c-) came under the influence of Galician choricar (“to whimper”) (cf. the variant salouzar, reflecting the original form more closely). Cognate with Portuguese soluçar, Spanish sollozar.[1]
