From Proto-Vietic *prɔːk, from Proto-Austroasiatic *prɔːkˀ (squirrel). Cognate with Khmer កំប្រុក (kɑmprok), Bahnar prok, Khmu [Cuang] pʰrɔːk.

Attested as sóc in the Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum (1651).
