This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “Was spelled as 牙耽 or 牙冘 in some dictionaries. While the 牙 (yá, “tooth”) makes immediate sense, both 耽 (dān) and 冘 are clearly just phonograms used for their phonetic values. I have no idea what the đam here could mean.” |
