Vietnamese
[edit]Etymology
[edit]manh + giông (“salamander”); the first element is the Sino-Vietnamese word from 盲 (“blind”).
Most likely derived from Chinese 盲螈 (manh nguyên, “blind salamander”), with Sinitic 螈 (nguyên) being replaced by native giông while still keeping Chinese head-final structure. The result of regular calqueing would be *(kì) giông mù.
