From Middle Dutch handelen, from Old Dutch handalon, from Proto-West Germanic *handulōn, from Proto-Germanic *handlōną. By surface analysis, hand +‎ elen. Ultimately of the same origin as the English borrowing at Etymology 2 below (thus, a doublet of the same).
