From findan +‎ -ig; the former element is a verb from Proto-Germanic *finþaną (compare Dutch vinden, German finden, Swedish finna), a secondary verb from Proto-Indo-European *pontHo- (compare Old Irish étain (I find), áitt (place), Latin pōns (bridge), Ancient Greek πόντος (póntos, sea), Old Armenian հուն (hun, ford), Avestan 𐬞𐬀𐬚𐬀 (paθa) (gen. paþō), Sanskrit पथ (patha, path)).
