[edit]From Proto-Uralic *šiŋere. Cognates include Northern Mansi таӈкыр (taňkyr), Erzya чеерь (čejeŕ), Finnish hiiri and Estonian hiir.[1][2] The hardware sense is a semantic loan from English mouse.
