Pronunciation

[edit]

Noun

[edit]

chục (, 𠦹, 𨔿)

  1. ten
một chục ngườiten men, one ten of men
hai chục ngườitwenty men, two tens of men
    phần chụcthe first decimal place
  2. (Mekong Delta) certain sets of numbers, most usually a dozen but might be as high as eighteen

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Một chục is usually used as a synonym of mười (for example, một chục người is synonymous with mười người). However, một in một chục is sometimes dropped in colloquial speech.
  • Unlike mười, which is a true numeral, chục is a noun. As a noun, chục cannot be followed by numerals. *chục một/hai/etc. are ungrammatical. For a parallel, compare English crore or myriad, which are nouns used to denote numbers and can not be directly followed by another numeral.
  • Used instead of mười if preceded by hàng (in all senses). *Hàng mười is not natively accepted.
  • chục trứng (ten eggs) may be used as a unit when concerning purchases of eggs.
