[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]From bács (“uncle”) + -i (diminutive suffix).[1]
Noun
[edit]bácsi (plural bácsik)
- uncle (a form of address for an older man, especially by children or in case of great age difference)
- (childish) uncle (any adult man)
- (dated) (chiefly with a possessive suffix) Synonym of nagybácsi (“uncle”, the brother or brother-in-law of one’s parent)
Usage notes
[edit]- Usually not a relative; used after the given or family name.
- It may sound patronizing when used by adults (e.g. by a doctor to address his/her patient), whether with or without a name element.
