[edit]Etymology
[edit]Attested since circa 1750. Unknown. Coromines proposed a blend of afogar or ofegar and another term, while discarding any relation with Lombard stofegar.[1]
Pronunciation
[edit]Verb
[edit]atafegar (first-person singular present atafego, first-person singular preterite atafeguei, past participle atafegado)
- to suffocate (due to heat, effort, or excessive clothing)
- to extinguish; to dose
- Synonym: apagar
- 1929, Celestino García Romero, Inferno e gloria:
- Tamén os ladróns d'aquí n'están a boas co inferno. Se o puderan atafegar! O que n'ha ir alá pensa: se hai que haxa; se arde, deixá-lo arder. Pero o que ve que vai direitiño! Cánto s'alegraría que no'o houbese! Que non fose máis que contos de cregos para ganar un peso.
- The thieves here are also at odds with hell. If they could dose it! The one who isn't going to go there thinks: if it exists, let it exist; if it burns, let it burn. But the one that goes straight towards it, how much would he rejoice if it doesn't exists! That it is but priest's tales made to gain a fivepence.
- (dated, cooking) to braise
- c. 1750, anonymous author, Galanteo de mozo e moza:
- De dous anos pra esta parte
eu non sey, que Deño trago;
pois non acouxo conmigo,
tanto enpê, como deytado:
Nin topo cousa â meu gusto,
nin cheyro na comida acho;
mais que sexan sopas de unto
atafagadas no asado.- Two years now
I don't know what's wrong with me;
I can't find no satisfaction,
either lying or standing:
I don't find things to my liking
not even flavour in my food;
even if it is bacon soup
braised in the pot
- Two years now
