words with no masculine nominative singular ending

[edit]
  • fús (willing, eager), ern (vigorous, hale), forn (ancient, old), frækn (valiant), gegn (favorable, useful), hás (hoarse), laus (loose; free) (heyrnarlaus (deaf), mállaus (mute), vitlaus (silly, crazy; incorrect)), ljós (bright, light; clear, evident), lygn (calm (of water, weather)), læs (legible; readable; able to read), megn (strong, mighty), skyggn (clearsighted; having second sight), sýkn (innocent), vís (wise; certain)
  • with u-mutation: gjarn (eager, ready) (goðgjarn (kindly); not in BÍN), jafn (equal, even, level), snjall (masterly, excellent, clever)
  • In snjall, both l's are part of the stem.
  • with loss of -s after a consonant before genitive -s: frjáls (free), hress (in good spirits, well), viss (certain)
  • with loss of -s after a consonant before genitive -s, and u-mutation: hvass (keen, sharp; stormy)
  • with loss of -r after a consonant before endings beginning with -r: kyrr (quiet), þurr (dry)
  • with loss of -r after a consonant before endings beginning with -r, and u-mutation: [there seem to be none]

words in -ll

[edit]
  • háll, strjáll and þjáll have two possible comparatives, in -li and -ari, but one superlative in -astur. Here, both superlatives generated from the comparatives will be the same and deduplicate.
  • förull has both contracted and uncontracted forms. Contracted comparative in -ari (förlari), uncontracted in -li (förulli); but although in the positive and superlative, the contracted is given first, in the comparative the uncontracted förulli occurs before förlari. Here ~! means contracted stem. víðförull is identical to förull.
  • heimill (available; allowed)
  • vesall (pitiful, weak; sick) (less common variant of vesæll)
  • Per Thomson, the pattern of vesall is complex with multiple alternants. BÍN shows a simplified version with regular umut in the feminine vesöl and no contraction.

words in -nn but not -Cinn

[edit]
  • Specifying sup implies comp
  • Only sýnn itself has irregular superlative, not any compounds

words in -inn other than -einn

[edit]
  • Vowel stem is söngn- without -v-; likewise höggvinn and various derivatives of it

irregular words

[edit]

words that are comparative-only or superlative-only

[edit]
  • eystri (more to the east)
  • Specifying -pos means "no positive form" and the lemma is in comparative form, unless -pos and -comp are both given, in which case the lemma is in superlative form. Comparative-form lemmas are automatically weak-only in the comparative but both states (weak and strong) in the superlative.
  • austari (more to the east)
  • BÍN lists a superlative austastur (easternmost) for austari but not for eystri. The default whenever a comparative is present is for a superlative also to be present and the superlative of comparative-form lemmas is derived by converting -ri to -stur (or -li/-ni to -lastur/-nastur).
  • vestri (more to the west)
  • nyrðri (more to the north)
  • The superlative nyrstur (northernmost) is irregular (the regular form would be #nyrðstur).
  • norðari (more to the north)
  • FIXME: Thomson gives a superlative norðastur (northernmost) but not BÍN. Forms do exist but seem rare.
  • syðri (more to the south)
  • The superlative syðstur (southernmost) is regular and generated automatically.
  • aftari (more to the rear/back, rear, hind(er))

(with regular aftastur (rearmost, hindmost))

  • [eftri (more to the rear/back, rear, hind(er))]; not in BÍN
  • efri (upper) (with regular efstur (uppermost))
  • fjærri (farther) (with regular fjærstur (farthest))
  • Here, the rules for handling -rri treat á/æ/ý as the end of the stem, but other vowels include the -r- in the stem. FIXME: We should consider changing this to only special-case á.
  • fremri (front, forward) (with regular fremstur (foremost))
  • fyrri (earlier) (with regular fyrstur (earliest, first))
  • FIXME: BÍN has fyrri and fyrstur separately as comparative-only and positive-only lemmas (not superlative-only in the latter case).
  • heimari (nearer home) (with regular heimastur (nearest home)) (dated)
  • heldri (superior, better) (with irregular helstur (foremost, most important))
  • innri (inner) (with regular innstur (innermost))
  • nærri (nearer) (with semi-regular næstur (nearest, next); we need to specify the superlative to avoid getting nærstur)
  • Here, the rules for handling -rri treat á/æ/ý as the end of the stem; see above. FIXME: BÍN doesn't give nærri at all except as an adverb and preposition, and lists næstur as superlative-only.
  • síðri (inferior) (with irregular sístur (most inferior, worst))
  • skárri (better) (with semi-regular skástur (best); we need to specify the superlative to avoid getting skárstur)
  • ytri (outer) (with irregular ystur (outermost))
  • [utastur (outermost)] FIXME: not in BÍN
