Etymology

[edit]

From Old Norse [Term?] *þes-, þessi (neuter plural), sjá (nominative),[1] related to and from the same ultimate origin as the irregular inflection of Old Norse , a descendant from the likewise irregularly inflected Proto-Germanic *sa.[1] Cognate with Old English þes and Old High German dese.

Pronunciation

[edit]

Pronoun

[edit]

þessi (feminine þessi, neuter þetta or (uncommon) þettað)

  1. (demonstrative) this, that (referring to both persons and things)

Usage notes

[edit]

As in all North Germanic languages, unless referring to a specific, stated noun, the gender which þessi defaults to is neuter. “What is this” is thus not hvað er þessi“, but hvað er þetta.
