Usage

[edit]

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote the The Century Dictionary (1st edition, 1889–1891, 6 volumes). It can be used to create links to online versions of the works at Google Books, the HathiTrust Digital Library, and the Internet Archive:

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1= or |volume=mandatory: the volume number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, from |volume=I to |volume=VI.
  • |2= or |entry= – the name of the entry quoted from. If this parameter is not stated, the name of the Wiktionary entry is used.
  • |3=, |pos= or |part of speech= – the part of speech of the entry. By default, the template italicizes the value assigned to the parameter and adds a full stop (period) to the end. To turn off the default formatting for the purpose of specifying a different formatting using wikitext markup and templates, specify |noformat=1 or |noformat=yes.
  • |4= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=110–111.
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to an online version of the work.
  • |column= or |columns= – the column number(s) cited. Separate the first and last column numbers in a range of columns with an en dash, like this: |columns=1–2.
  • |5=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage quoted from the work.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
