Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *kert-, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kert-, extension of *(s)ker-. Cognate with Latvian cìrst (to hew, slash), Lithuanian kir̃sti (to hew, slash), Old High German scrintan (to split, burst), Sanskrit कृन्तति (kṛntati, to cut, split, break).
