[edit]From *kõrtъ (“instance, occurence”) + *-ъkъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kártas, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kerd-, *(s)kert- (“short”) + *-kъ. Related to Latin curtus, Proto-Germanic *skurtaz and English curt.
