From *kõrtъ (instance, occurence) +‎ *-ъkъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kártas, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kerd-, *(s)kert- (short) + *-kъ. Related to Latin curtus, Proto-Germanic *skurtaz and English curt.
