Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *(s)krdʰ-o-s, a zero-grade formation from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kerdʰ- (to cut up), for which see *skardaz (cut-up, damaged) for more.[1] Compare also Latin curtus (shortened, incomplete), Proto-Slavic *kortъkъ (short).
