Usage notes
[edit]Outside of children's usage, this term is traditionally used as a 지칭 (jiching), meaning that, it is only used to refer to one's mother, not to address them directly. As an adult, the traditional 호칭 (hoching) to address one's mother directly is 어머니 (eomeoni).[1][2]
