Etymology

Presumably from Middle Korean 아비〮 (àpí) with a fixed suffix *앙 (*-ang). Compare 어멍 (eomeong), 하르방 (hareubang), 할망 (halmang). Cognate with Korean 아비 (abi)

Usage notes

Outside of children's usage, this term is traditionally used as a 지칭 (jiching), meaning that, it is only used to refer to one's father, not to address them directly. As an adult, the traditional 호칭 (hoching) to address one's father directly is 아바지 (abaji).
