Glyph origin

[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *b·lɯŋ): semantic (insect) + phonetic (OC *mlenʔ, *mliŋʔ, *mreːŋʔ).

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *mrəŋ (fly; bee). Compare (OC mˁraŋ, “horsefly”), Tibetan སྦྲང་བུ (sbrang bu, bee), Japhug ɣʑo (bee) (STEDT; Coblin, 1986; Benedict, 1972; Zhang, Jacques, and Lai, 2019).

Schuessler (2007), preferring to reconstruct a "minimal" Old Chinese *jəŋ or *ləŋ, instead potentially compares Burmese ယင် (yang, fly), Chepang याङ् (insect; fly). Schuessler's reconstruction and etymology cannot be maintained, since it is incompatible with the fact that this word is in the  / phonetic series, as well as being incompatible with the Min reflexes.
