Etymology
[edit]Originally a native Chinese word meaning “unrestrained, indulgent”. Later used as a phono-semantic matching of English romantic, itself derived from French romantique. Compare also Chinese 羅馬/罗马 (Luómǎ), French roman (“novel”).
