[edit]From 摩訶 (maka, itself from Sanskrit महा (mahā), “great”) + 般若波羅蜜多心経 (Hannya Haramitta Shingyō, “Prajñāpāramitā Hṛdaya Sūtra”).

Usage notes
[edit]In the Shingon sect of esoteric Buddhism, the sutra is further introduced with 仏説 (bussetsu, “teaching of the Buddha”); therefore, beginning their recitation with Bussetsu Maka Hannya Haramitta Shingyō.
