Etymology

From *იკინა (*iǩina) +‎ -შ (, genitive case marker) +‎ დღა (dğa, day). The meaning of *იკინა (*iǩina) is unknown. Marr connects it with Old Armenian երկին-ք (erkin-kʻ, sky) and explains the formation as "sky day".
