[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰnumᴮ¹ (“young”). Cognate with Lao ໜຸ່ມ (num), Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᨶᩩ᩵ᨾ, Khün ᩉ᩠ᨶᩩ᩵ᨾ, Lü ᦐᦳᧄᧈ (ṅum¹), Tai Dam ꪘꪴ꪿ꪣ, Tai Dón ꪘꪮꪝꫀ or ꪶꪘꪝꫀ, Shan ၼုမ်ႇ (nùm), Tai Nüa ᥘᥧᥛᥱ (lǔm) or ᥢᥧᥛᥱ (nǔm), Ahom 𑜃𑜤𑜉𑜫 (num). Compare Javanese nom. Likely underwent semantic narrowing as the cognates in other Tai languages can be used to describe either gender.
